Lesson Plan: Elements of Design
Subject: Clothing and Textile
Grade Level: Senior Secondary 1
Duration: 50 minutes
Topic: Elements of Design
Objective:
By the end of the lesson, students should be able to:
1. Identify and define the basic elements of design.
2. Explain how the elements of design are used in clothing and textiles.
3. Apply the elements of design in creating a simple fashion sketch.
Materials Needed:
- Whiteboard and markers
- Projector and computer (for showing visuals)
- Sketch paper
- Pencils, colored pencils, or markers
- Samples of various fabrics and clothing items
- Handout on Elements of Design
Lesson Structure:
1. Introduction (10 minutes)
a. Greeting and roll call.
b. Briefly discuss the importance of design in clothing and textiles.
c. Introduce the topic: Elements of Design.
d. Provide an overview of the elements of design: Line, Shape, Form, Texture, Color, and Space.
2. Direct Instruction (15 minutes)
a. Using a PowerPoint presentation or a visual layout on the whiteboard, explain each element of design:
i. Line: Direction, width, and length (e.g., vertical, horizontal, diagonal, curved)
ii. Shape: Geometric, organic, and abstract shapes
iii. Form: 3D aspects of shapes (e.g., the silhouette of garments)
iv. Texture: Surface quality (e.g., smooth, rough, silky, nubby)
v. Color: Hue, value, and intensity; color wheel, primary/secondary colors, warm/cool colors
vi. Space: Positive and negative space in design composition
b. Show images and examples of clothing or textiles that emphasize each element.
c. Discuss how designers use these elements to create visually appealing garments.
3. Activity: Design Application (15 minutes)
a. Distribute sketch paper and drawing materials to students.
b. Instruct students to create a simple fashion sketch (dress, shirt, or any clothing item) incorporating at least three of the elements of design discussed.
c. As students work, circulate around the classroom to provide guidance and feedback.
4. Class Discussion and Reflection (8 minutes)
a. Allow students to share their sketches with the class.
b. Discuss which elements of design they used and why they chose those elements.
c. Encourage students to analyze how each element contributes to the overall design.
5. Recap and Assignment (2 minutes)
a. Summarize the main points of the lesson.
b. Provide a handout that reviews the elements of design for students to study.
c. Assign homework: Have students find an example of a clothing item from a magazine, online, or from their own wardrobe that demonstrates the use of at least three elements of design. They should write a short paragraph explaining their selection.
6. Closing (1 minute)
a. Answer any remaining questions from students.
b. Thank the class for their participation and attention.
Assessment:
- Informal assessment through classroom participation and activity observation.
- Evaluation of student sketches based on the incorporation of design elements.
- Review of homework assignment for understanding of the lesson.
Differentiation:
- Provide additional visual aids for students with different learning needs.
- Offer one-on-one support during sketching activity for students who may need extra assistance.
- Encourage advanced students to create more complex designs or incorporate all six elements.
Note: Adjustments may be made based on the classroom environment, number of students, and available resources.
